Iraq strengthens air defense capabilities, secures borders, says military spox, 6 OCT

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Major General Yehia Rasool, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, announced on Saturday that Iraq has taken all necessary measures to secure its airspace.

He emphasized that Iraq now has the capability to monitor and track incoming and outgoing aircraft, further bolstering the country’s defense.

Speaking to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Rasool highlighted that the Iraqi government, under the leadership of Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, has prioritized the development of Iraq’s air defense system.

“A contract was signed with South Korea several months ago to acquire an advanced air defense system, although it will take time to fully implement,” Rasool said.

While acknowledging that Iraq’s airspace is not yet fully secured, Rasool stressed that all essential steps have been taken to ensure its protection. He pointed to Iraq’s enhanced capability to monitor its airspace and manage aircraft traffic.

Rasool also mentioned the integration of advanced Korean-made X-16 and K-50 aircraft, along with transport and reconnaissance planes, as key components of Iraq’s air defense.

"These assets have strengthened the Iraqi air force and contribute significantly to safeguarding Iraq’s sovereignty," he added.

Border Security Efforts

Addressing the issue of border security, Major General Rasool confirmed that Iraqi borders, particularly those shared with Syria, are well-secured.

He highlighted the deployment of Iraqi border forces, reinforced by thermal cameras and surveillance equipment, to maintain vigilance.

“The military leadership has placed great importance on securing Iraq’s borders,” Rasool said, noting that the army is positioned behind the borders, along with five lines of border forces.

These units conduct qualitative and preemptive operations based on intelligence, employing ambush tactics and precise monitoring to ensure security.

Rasool’s statements underscore the Iraqi government’s ongoing commitment to protecting the country’s airspace and borders, as part of a broader strategy to enhance national security.
