The United States has firmly rejected Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s proposal to tie the disarmament of armed factions to the future of the U.S.-led Global Coalition in Iraq.
Instead, Washington is urging Baghdad to disband Iran-backed militias operating under the guise of state-sanctioned forces.
🔹 U.S. Statement: Disarmament Is Iraq’s Duty
💬 A State Department spokesperson emphasized to Shafaq News that combating terrorist groups remains Iraq’s sovereign responsibility.
“Their actions drain the country’s resources and act against its national interests,” the spokesperson said.
The message was clear: Baghdad must control armed groups — not condition it on U.S. military cooperation.
🔹 The Militias at the Center of It All
🪖 Iraq officially recognizes both:
The Iraqi National Army, and
The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF)
While the PMF is legally part of Iraq’s defense structure, many factions operate under the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” , a coalition aligned with Iran’s Axis of Resistance — which includes Hezbollah (Lebanon) and the Houthis (Yemen).
These groups oppose U.S. and Israeli influence, often clashing with American interests and coalition objectives.
🔹 What About the U.S. Troops in Iraq?
🇺🇸 Around 2,500 American troops remain in Iraq.
Washington insists the U.S. is not withdrawing, but rather “transitioning” the Global Coalition’s mission toward a bilateral security partnership focused on training, intelligence, and diplomacy.
🗓️ Both sides recently finalized an agreement setting a roadmap for full troop withdrawal by September 2026, though officials frame it as an “evolution,” not an exit.
