Washington challenges Tehran: direct negotiations or no meeting in Oman
4/9/2025
The Washington Post, citing a US administration official, reported on Wednesday that the team of US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, sent messages to the Iranian side via the Sultanate of Oman, calling for direct talks.
The official explained that if Iran refuses to hold direct talks, Witkov may not travel to Oman, where the meetings were scheduled.
According to officials familiar with the negotiations, Witkoff may travel to Tehran if he receives an official invitation from Iranian authorities.
The newspaper said that Trump is fully aware that any negotiations with Iran cannot be separated from the Israeli position, noting that he deliberately announced his desire to conduct a direct dialogue with Tehran in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his reception at the White House, a move that one official interpreted as aimed at "keeping Netanyahu under control."
Trump sent a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei last March proposing the resumption of nuclear negotiations, but stressed that Iran had only two months to engage in diplomacy.
Western estimates indicate that Iran possesses a sufficient stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which could enable it within weeks to reach the enrichment level necessary to produce several nuclear weapons. However, developing a nuclear warhead capable of being mounted on a ballistic missile could take a year or more.
