Iran on Trump's message: It included opportunities and threats, and we will respond to them at the appropriate time.

Iran on Trump

3/20/2025

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi revealed on Thursday that the message sent by US President Donald Trump to Tehran included numerous "opportunities" in addition to the threats it contained, stressing that his country's response will take all these details into consideration.

In a television interview, Araghchi said that Tehran's response to Trump's message will encompass all its dimensions, including threats and opportunities. "However, we will absolutely not negotiate directly under pressure, threats, and tightening sanctions. We will respond to Trump's message in the coming days and send it through the appropriate channels."

He added, "The message is mostly threatening, but it also claims there are opportunities. We will see the dimensions of the threat and the opportunity."

The Iranian government announced on Thursday that Tehran is studying Trump's message and will respond at the appropriate time and in an appropriate manner.

Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said, "The door to diplomatic negotiations will remain open if its etiquette is respected."

US media reports had previously indicated that Trump's letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei included a two-month deadline to reach a new nuclear agreement.

According to Axios, it is unclear whether the two-month deadline begins from the time the letter is delivered or from the start of negotiations. However, if Iran rejects Trump's initiative and does not negotiate, the chances of US or Israeli military action against Iranian nuclear facilities will increase significantly.

Two weeks ago, Trump revealed that he had sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader proposing direct negotiations.

The next day, Trump said the United States was "at the last resort" with Iran, adding, "We cannot allow them to have a nuclear weapon. Something will happen very soon. A peace deal is better than the other option. That option will solve the problem."

Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, delivered the letter a few days ago to UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed during a meeting in Abu Dhabi.

The next day, Mohammed bin Zayed's advisor, Anwar Gargash, traveled to Tehran and delivered the message to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Sources told Axios that Trump's message to Khamenei was "firm." On the one hand, it proposed negotiations on a new nuclear agreement, but on the other, it warned of the consequences if Iran rejected the offer and continued to pursue its nuclear program.
