Al-Awadi: The contact between the Prime Minister and the US President-elect was

Mawazine News – Baghdad

The spokesman for the Iraqi government, Bassem Al-Awadi, said on Saturday that the recent contact between Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and the US President-elect Donald Trump is characterized by a high degree of positivity, and while pointing out that the communication reflects the mutual desire between Baghdad and Washington to maintain a high level of understanding, he stressed that the Prime Minister welcomed Trump’s statements about stopping the war in the region and announced his readiness to participate in this path to maintain stability.

Al-Awadi said in a statement to the official agency, followed by “Mawazin News”, that “the recent contact between the Prime Minister and US President-elect Donald Trump was characterized by a high degree of positivity between the two presidents, and without a doubt such a call should have occurred 48 hours after President Trump’s victory in the elections and before the official inauguration day, and the keenness of the two parties to communicate by phone reflects the mutual desire between Baghdad and Washington to maintain a high level of understanding and communication and push relations to high levels.”

He continued, “The two parties stressed the importance of moving forward with relations, and the Prime Minister referred to President Trump’s positive statements on stopping the war in the region and stressed his readiness to actively participate in this path to maintain the stability of the region. President Trump also indicated his aspiration for a close meeting with the Prime Minister, which confirms that Baghdad and Washington are committed to the agreed path and what requires is cooperation in order to strengthen it.”

He continued, “Baghdad and Washington have been able since 2011 until now to build a sober infrastructure for relations based on technical and professional committees and a clear roadmap starting from the Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA), the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC), the Higher Coordination Committee (HCC), and the Joint Security Dialogue Committee (JSCD), in addition to the role of the foreign ministries of the two countries and the role of ambassadors, and the continuation of hotlines through the international relations committees in the Prime Minister’s Office, culminating in communication between the Prime Minister and senior American administration officials, and each of these committees takes its role professionally and technically far from political influences in enhancing the reality of the relationship between the two countries.”

He pointed out that “certainly the political relationship between Baghdad and Washington went through a state of rise and downs, but the sober ground, the mutual readiness for joint action and good intentions have always modified the level of decline and pushed it forward, so the Iraqi government, based on its primary duty to preserve Iraq’s foreign interests, puts the relationship with the international community and the major countries at the top of the list of political priorities and will continue the journey of working with the various administrations on the basis of common interests and mutual respect.”
On Friday, Sudanese Prime Minister Mohammed Shia held a call with US President-elect Donald Trump, in which they agreed to coordinate together to end wars in the region.

The Prime Minister’s Information Office said in a statement received by NRT Arabic, a copy of it, that “the Prime Minister expressed during the call his congratulations on the President and the American people on the occasion of winning the elections, and the great trust given to it by the American people.”

He added, “The two sides also stressed the desire to continue the strategic partnership between the two countries, and strengthen bilateral relations in ways that go beyond the security aspect, through close cooperation in the fields of economy, money, energy and technology.”

The Prime Minister indicated – according to the statement – that “he was aware of the words and promises of Trump, during the election campaign, including his commitment to ending wars in the region, and the two sides agreed to coordinate together to achieve this.”

For his part, the US president-elect expressed “the desire to work positively with the Prime Minister, and meet in the near future to discuss expanding relations between Iraq and the United States of America, and work on these common files.”
