Iraq calls for urgent Arab League meeting on Lebanon, 2 OCT

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s permanent representative to the Arab League, Qahtan Al-Janabi, announced on Monday that a request has been submitted to the Arab League to hold an urgent meeting on Lebanon.

In a statement to the state news agency (INA), Al-Janabi explained that the Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, issued directions to submit a request to the Arab League to arrange an emergency meeting that will be attended by permanent representatives.

The Arab League meeting will discuss the current circumstances in Lebanon, particularly the situation of Lebanese citizens forced to leave their homes and the provision of humanitarian aid, according to Al-Janabi.

Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League, Hossam Zaki, confirmed in a statement that the General Secretariat of the Arab League received Iraq’s request, emphasizing that the request has been sent to member states to set a date for the meeting.

The Israeli army said in a statement that its troops have entered Lebanon as they prepare for a ground invasion targeting Hezbollah fighters in the southern parts of the country. However, Hezbollah officials confirmed that Israeli soldiers had not yet entered.

As Israel has increased the intensity of its assaults, the situation has gotten worse. The Israeli military has been attacking Hezbollah’s leadership, resulting in a wave of fierce airstrikes that have claimed more than 1,000 lives in the last two weeks, primarily in southern and eastern Lebanon.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other senior leaders were murdered last Friday in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburb.
