Iraqi Airways closer to Removal of EU Ban

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani chaired a key meeting with representatives from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to track progress on lifting the European Union's ban on Iraqi Airways.

During the session, the IATA delegation and the Head of the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) presented a detailed update, confirming that 71% of the agreed corrective action plan has been implemented. Discussions also explored the signing of a potential Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iraq and IATA to further formalise collaboration.

The review included compliance with IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) and EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) standards, with IATA affirming improved operational performance and pledging continued support through technical training to bolster aviation governance in Iraq.

Topics also covered included airport security, pilot development programmes, and the importance of aligning Iraqi Airways with global aviation service standards in areas such as cargo, ground services, and fuel operations.

Kurdish parties denounce Iraqi salary freeze as illegal

Shafaq News/ On Saturday, 43 Kurdish political parties and groups condemned a decision by Iraq’s Ministry of Finance to suspend salary disbursements during a meeting hosted at the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) political headquarters in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

In a joint statement, the parties said they convened to discuss the political situation in both Kurdistan and Iraq, focusing on ongoing disputes between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government—particularly the recent Finance Ministry decision, which they labeled “unconstitutional and illegal.”

The rights and salaries of KRG employees should not be subject to political conflicts, they said, warning that continued pressure tactics would only deepen crises.

The Kurdish parties further emphasized the need for unified action. “We believe dialogue and  negotiation are the best path to resolve this crisis, but we also affirm that all options remain on the table to safeguard the Region’s higher interests.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani is expected to authorize May salary payments for public sector employees in the Kurdistan Region through a temporary federal loan, a source told Shafaq News on Saturday.

Iraq’s president, PM discuss Kurdistan funding crisis: They also underscored the importance of passing the long-delayed oil and gas law

Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met in Baghdad to review national developments and government programs.

The Presidency’s media office stated that the meeting focused on the political and economic situation in the country.

Both sides stressed the need to resolve financial disputes between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government per the constitution, the federal budget law, and a recent ruling by the Federal Supreme Court.

They also underscored the importance of passing the long-delayed oil and gas law to regulate resource management between Baghdad and Erbil.

According to the statement, Rashid and al-Sudani emphasized the need to strengthen national unity and promote security and social stability across Iraq.

The Baghdad-Erbil dispute over federal salary payments has escalated after the Iraqi government suspended funding, accusing the KRG of withholding oil and non-oil revenues. The KRG countered that Baghdad is using salaries as political leverage and violating court rulings. The standoff coincides with a Kurdish delegation’s visit to Washington, where investment deals with US firms stirred controversy. The US State Department urged a swift resolution, calling it key to investor confidence and reopening the Kirkuk–Ceyhan pipeline.
