Secretary Rubio to Meet Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Washington

The United States Department of State has officially confirmed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Friday at 1:30 PM Washington time (8:30 PM Erbil time), according to the  Department’s Daily Public Schedule.

The high-level meeting will take place at the Department of State headquarters in Washington D.C., and will be followed by a joint press conference, signaling growing strategic cooperation between the U.S. and the Kurdistan Region.

This marks a significant engagement between the two allies amid intensified dialogue over regional security, energy cooperation, and the Kurdistan Region’s role in U.S. Middle East policy. The meeting comes as part of Prime Minister Barzani’s ongoing official visit to the United States, which has included pivotal talks with American officials, major energy companies, and congressional leaders.

During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the United States' strong support for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and its right to economic development. His remarks came in response to concerns raised by Congressman Joe Wilson regarding Iranian interference in the Kurdistan Region and its impact on American energy investments.

Congressman Wilson highlighted a recent multibillion-dollar agreement between the KRG and U.S. oil companies for the exploration and development of energy resources in the Kurdistan Region. However, he warned that increasing Iranian influence over Baghdad threatens these efforts.

In response, Secretary Rubio emphasized that Kurdish autonomy remains a central pillar of U.S. policy in Iraq. “We first have made clear that the lynchpin of our approach toward Iraq is the autonomy that the Kurdish population has in that part of the country,” he said. “Part of that is allowing them the economic lifeline that enables them to prosper and succeed.”

Rubio also reiterated that U.S. support for Iraq depends on Baghdad’s respect for American companies operating in the country and for the constitutional rights of the Kurdish people. “Iraqi officials have expressed interest in a closer relationship with the United States, and we’ve explained to them that the core of that is respect for the companies operating in Iraq and respect for Kurdish autonomy,” he added.

Addressing the broader issue of Iranian influence, Rubio issued a strong warning: “Iranian influence continues to grow, unfortunately, in some sectors of Iraq’s elected government, and it poses a grave danger to the United States—including in the form of pro-Iran Shia militias, who have in the past struck against the United States and may do so again. That’s unacceptable and must be addressed.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed on Friday that the fifth round of negotiations with the United States in Rome was one of the most professional stages of the negotiations, but he ruled out reaching an agreement at the current stage. 

Araghchi stated, "In this meeting, Iran's positions and principles regarding the negotiation process were once again presented with complete transparency. Our positions are completely clear, and we are committed to them."

He continued, "There now appears to be a clearer and more precise understanding of these positions on the American side. Indirect negotiations are still ongoing, and there is a growing possibility of progress in the next round."

The Iranian Foreign Minister also praised the efforts of his Omani counterpart, saying, "Al-Busaidi sought to identify existing obstacles and propose solutions to overcome them in order to enable progress in the negotiation process."

He explained that "these proposals were subject to discussion, and it was agreed that further specialized studies would be conducted by both sides, with these proposals being sent to the respective capitals for further study, without any obligations arising from them."

He added, "The two sides will present their views on the proposed proposals and solutions, after which the next round of negotiations will be planned and implemented."

Araghchi emphasized the complexity of the negotiations, saying, "The negotiations are extremely complex and cannot reach a final outcome in two or three meetings. However, the fact that the talks are now proceeding on a reasonable track is in itself a sign of progress, and we hope that solutions will be reached in the next one or two meetings that will pave the way for progress in the negotiations."

In a related development, sources revealed that Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and Mossad chief David Barneague are in Rome, Italy, for talks with the US negotiating team with Iran.

This Israeli presence, confirmed by Reuters to monitor the negotiations, follows an earlier CNN report citing new US intelligence indicating that Israel is preparing to launch potential strikes on Iranian nuclear targets. 

While Israel has not confirmed the report, officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have repeatedly emphasized that "military action remains an option to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

Boosting non-oil revenues: Iraqi PM orders state-owned enterprises overhaul

 Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani chaired a high-level meeting of the Higher Committee for the Restructuring of State-Owned Enterprises, issuing directives to classify state-owned enterprises and accelerate financial and administrative reforms.

According to a statement from his office, the committee reviewed its core agenda, which includes revitalizing Iraq’s non-oil revenues, restructuring public sector companies, and assessing previous reform decisions. The meeting focused on aligning public enterprise management with sound economic principles to improve performance, secure employee rights, and strengthen the state treasury.

The committee approved several key recommendations, including the establishment of a new entity named the General Company for Construction, Supplies, and Scientific Investments. It also endorsed a reclassification plan for selected public companies and adopted recommendations stemming from the Global Investor Day Conference.

Additionally, the committee approved a new economic policy paper and endorsed guidelines for fuel allocation for public companies, based on reports from its subcommittees tasked with classification and reform oversight.
