US Congress confirms Commitment to Supporting Iraq and Strengthening Strategic Partnership

The US Congress confirmed, on Sunday, the United States’ commitment to supporting Iraq in various fields and strengthening the existing strategic partnership between the two countries. It reiterated its commitment to effective communication with Iraqi leaders to continue joint work for a better future for both countries.
 
The Speaker of Parliament’s media office said in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The Speaker of Parliament today received a high-level delegation from the US Congress and members of the US Embassy. During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States within the framework of the Strategic Framework Agreement, and ways to enhance joint cooperation in the political, economic, and security fields.”
 
  “The visiting delegation included Representative Adam Smith, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee from the Democratic Party, Representative Sarah Jacobs, Representative Michael Baumgartner, Representative George Whitesides, and Representative Wesley Bell, along with the Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy, Mr. Daniel Rubinstein, and a number of advisors and members of the professional staff of the Armed Services Committee.”
 
According to the statement, during the meeting, the Speaker of Parliament emphasized “the importance of the Strategic Framework Agreement as the cornerstone of Iraqi-American relations,” emphasizing “the need to activate its provisions to ensure mutual interests between the two countries, particularly in the areas of developing the national economy and investing in non-oil sectors such as agriculture and industry.”
 
Al-Mashhadani pointed out “the importance of the Iraqi Constitution as the foundation of the country’s democratic system, with the possibility of developing and amending it in accordance with Article (142) and in a manner consistent with the aspirations of the Iraqi people.” He emphasized “the need to develop the education and agriculture sectors and support political and security stability in Iraq and the region.” He expressed Iraq’s firm position in supporting ceasefire efforts in Gaza and the need to end wars and conflicts in the region, which would contribute to consolidating peace and achieving prosperity.
 
For its part, the American delegation confirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Iraq in various fields and strengthening the existing strategic partnership between the two countries, reiterating the US Congress’s keenness to communicate effectively with Iraqi leaders to continue working together for a better future for both countries.

3. Review the foundations of the commercial relationship with the United States.

4. Open a dialogue with the corresponding American sectoral side. The "American sectoral side of trade" refers to the specific industries and areas of the U.S. economy that are most affected by international trade.

What is interesting about these agreements is they lead Iraq toward a market economy. A market economy would move their exchange rate from the government's control to market forces driven by supply and demand. And, demand for their currency would change the value of the Iraqi dinar.

President Barzani Receives Iraqi PM Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani

In an official statement from Barzani Headquarters, President Masoud Barzani received Prime Minister Sudani at his residence in the Salahaddin resort. The two leaders discussed political developments and the latest regional changes, emphasizing the need for coordination among Iraqi parties to overcome crises and address national challenges.

Another key focus of the meeting was the relationship between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government of Iraq, with both sides reaffirming the importance of dialogue in resolving outstanding issues.

Speaking to Kurdistan 24, Peshawa Hawramani, KRG spokesperson, emphasized the importance of the visit: “Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s trip to Erbil is significant in terms of discussing and resolving the outstanding issues between the two governments. Past meetings have yielded positive outcomes, and we continue to stress that dialogue remains the only viable path toward joint solutions.”

Hawramani added, “We want to play a constructive role in the region’s security, political, and economic transformations. In that regard, it is crucial that the Federal Government respects and guarantees the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region, which must serve as the foundation for any resolution. ”

Ali al-Awadi, spokesperson for the Iraqi government, also highlighted the scope of the visit in a statement to Kurdistan 24. “Prime Minister Sudani’s visit falls within the framework of principle-based dialogue on essential matters between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region. The government is committed to maintaining this principle across the political spectrum and with all parties involved in the political process,” Awadi said.

Sudani is expected to hold additional high-level talks with Prime Minister Masrour Barzani later in the day, following his meeting with President Masoud Barzani. This visit marks the fourth time that the Iraqi premier has traveled to the Kurdistan Region since assuming office. His most recent visit occurred on Nov. 13, 2024, during which he also met with President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

The ongoing high-level meetings reflect a renewed political will to build trust and cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad, amidst complex disputes over budget allocations, oil revenues, and security arrangements.
