Baghdad –

The Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Al-Saadawi, revealed that the first phase of the Al-Faw Grand Port will be completed by the end of 2025.
Expected to be the biggest seaport in the Middle East, Iraq’s Al-Faw Grand Port stands out due to its open-sea setting, which spans 54 square kilometers, according to Al-Saadawi.

The first phase of the project consists of five piers, which have been completely finished; a 62-kilometer road that connects the Al-Faw Grand Port to Umm Qasr port city; a 2,400-meter-long submerged tunnel; a ship canal; and a container yard, the Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

As part of a field tour conducted last November to review the progress made in major projects of the southern Iraqi port, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, inaugurated the port’s first five container berths.

Al-Sudani reviewed the port’s major projects, including the container yard and the underwater tunnel, which is one of the important parts of Iraq’s Development Road.

The underwater tunnel being built under the Khor Al-Zubair Channel forms part of the new highway being built to link the Al-Faw Grand Port to Umm Qasr Port and the existing transport network, including Iraq’s Development Road.

The Al-Faw Grand Port is located on the Khor Abdallah Channel, near the mouth of Shatt Al-Arab.

According to Maritime Gateway News, the five container shipping berths, which have been constructed by Daewoo E&C, a company located in South Korea, can each hold ships up to 23,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

With 100 berths and the capacity to handle 7.5 million TEU annually, the Al-Faw Grand Port is expected to surpass Dubai’s 67-berth Jebel Ali as the largest container port in the Middle East when finished in 2038.

Four million TEU of containers may be handled annually by the port’s first phase, which is anticipated to be finished in 2028.

By connecting the port city of Basra to Turkey via an overland route, the $7 billion logistics project will compete with Egypt’s Suez Canal and establish Basra as a gateway to Europe.

The lofty project, which aims to connect Asia and Europe through gas and oil pipelines, rail networks, and road networks, includes the 2.4-kilometer underwater tunnel as a key component.

Sisi: Suez Canal revenue losses amounted to $800 million due to the situation in the region.

3/18/2025

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said that the Suez Canal revenue losses amounted to $800 million due to the situation in the region.

El-Sisi pointed to the difficult circumstances facing the world and the Middle East, explaining that Egypt has managed to move forward with steady, measured steps despite the challenges it has faced over the past fifteen years, including the economic crises that have also affected the world. The country is incurring monthly losses estimated at approximately $800 million in Suez Canal revenue due to the situation in the region.

In contrast, Sisi affirmed that the Egyptian economy is witnessing positive indicators, pointing to the International Monetary Fund's recent approval of a new tranche of aid to Egypt. He also praised the role and cohesion of the Egyptian people and the strength of state institutions, particularly the armed forces and the civil police, as they represent the country's cornerstone in these exceptional times.

Baghdad pushes to resume Iraqi Kurdistan’s oil exports to Turkey’s Ceyhan

3/15/2025

Baghdad  –

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, confirmed on Monday that Baghdad is exerting efforts to restart oil shipments from Iraqi Kurdistan to the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

Al-Sudani’s remarks took place during his meeting with the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, where he emphasized that the Iraqi government is eager to expand cooperative efforts with Turkish businesses across a range of industries, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Al-Sudani underlined the government’s desire to strengthen energy-related cooperation with Turkey, including expanding the supply of power through interconnection projects and diversifying energy sources.

The Iraqi prime minister indicated that negotiations are ongoing with foreign oil companies operating in the Kurdistan region of Iraq to resolve some technical issues related to the resumption of oil exports.

Bayraktar emphasized the significance of shipping oil from Basra through the Turkish port of Ceyhan and his country’s goal to boost collaboration with Iraq in a number of areas, such as refinery and petrochemical projects.

The Turkish minister also highlighted the significance of Iraq’s strategic project of the Development Road and the associated investment prospects.

In late February, Baghdad said that the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO) had finished the necessary steps to begin exporting oil produced in Iraqi Kurdistan through the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

The step followed a nearly two-year-long disagreement that disrupted the supply of over 300,000 barrels of Iraqi oil per day to international markets via Turkey.

A Washington politician said that the factions in Iraq are now "disarmed"

3/19/2025

Washington-based Iraqi politician Nizar Haider said on Wednesday that armed factions in Iraq are now effectively "disarmed" following direct and clear US threats.

"Since Washington revealed the truth about the phone call the Foreign Minister made with Al-Sudani and the clear dictates it contained regarding the United States' request for Iraq to immediately sever its ties with neighboring Iran regarding the gas and electricity file, the Prime Minister's Office no longer has the courage to manipulate its media statements after every phone call between Baghdad and Washington, or to embellish the content of the calls or publish what it believes the Iraqi public opinion should hear and read, even if it is far from the truth," Haidar told Shafaq News Agency.

He added, "Al-Sudani's office is well aware that Washington is lurking to uncover the truth about the communications, and is keen to communicate the facts and inform the Iraqis of them as they are, not as Al-Sudani's office publishes them."

"Therefore, we noted, perhaps for the first time, that the official statement published by Baghdad regarding the phone call conducted by the US Secretary of Defense with Al-Sudani was clear in conveying the language of the dictates in which the Secretary spoke to him. The statement also referred to the clear threat conveyed by the Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief regarding any armed activity that the armed factions might intend to engage in against US interests in the region in response to the current escalation in Yemen," Haidar continued.

The Iraqi politician pointed out that "it is very clear that President Trump's Washington is radically different from President Biden's Washington in dealing with this file, which is based on what President Trump called (ending the phenomenon of weapons chaos in the Middle East)," explaining that "Baghdad, and specifically the factions, understood and absorbed this, and they are now, by virtue of being disarmed, and have not raised their previous slogans such as (unity of arenas) or (support front) or the like."

Informed sources revealed on Monday that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth delivered a strongly worded warning message to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani during a phone call with him last Sunday evening.

On Sunday, Al-Sudani received a phone call from Hegseth, during which they discussed the strategic partnership between Iraq and the United States and their shared interest in regional stability and security.

Regarding this call, sources told Shafaq News Agency that "Hegseth informed al-Sudani that any interference by Iraqi armed factions regarding the US targeting of the Houthis in Yemen would prompt Washington to launch a swift military response against those factions inside Iraq, and therefore they must be prevented from any interference, as happened previously in the wars in Lebanon and Gaza."

The sources added that "the US Secretary of Defense stressed to Al-Sudani the need to expedite the resolution of the issue of disarming the armed factions and work to dismantle them. He emphasized that this issue is of great interest to President Trump and his administration, while Al-Sudani confirmed that the government is working on this issue and is in dialogue with the armed parties to reach an agreement in this regard."

According to an official Iraqi statement, the Prime Minister discussed with the US Secretary of Defense developments in the region, particularly military operations in Yemen and the "worrying" situation in Syria.

The US Secretary of Defense also reviewed developments related to military operations in Yemen, noting that the United States will continue its operations unless Houthi attacks on US forces and their impact on navigation in the Red Sea cease. He also emphasized that Washington is not seeking escalation, and that military operations will cease as soon as these attacks cease.

According to the statement, Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq's commitment to protecting international coalition advisors who are present in Iraq at the invitation of the Iraqi government to support efforts to combat ISIS. He also emphasized Iraq's commitment to restricting the use of force to the state and enhancing internal stability.
