Former MP: Mystery surrounds oil extraction contracts in Kurdistan

Former MP Mohammed Al-Shabaki confirmed today, Wednesday, that the Kurdistan Regional Government did not provide any information about its contracts with oil extraction companies from the fields it seizes. 

Al-Shabaki said in an interview with Al-Maalouma Agency, "The ambiguity surrounds the contracts of oil companies with the Kurdistan Regional Government, which seizes the fields, and there is political controversy over this issue and questions about whether these contracts were concluded with the government's approval or not," indicating that "this issue will be included in the amendments to the financial budget law for next year." 

He added, "A consulting company will audit these contracts to determine the cost of oil production in the Kurdistan Region and whether it exceeds $16 per barrel as the regional government claims or otherwise, because this information is not clear to the federal government, the Ministry of Oil, and the National Oil Marketing Company (SOMO)," indicating that "amending Article 12 of the budget, which is related to the cost of extracting Kurdistan oil, has no financial consequences." 

 It is noteworthy that the House of Representatives is witnessing a state of confusion regarding amending Article 12 of the Financial Budget Law, while representatives confirm that the Kurdistan Regional Government does not send any money from its oil and non-oil revenues despite receiving its share of the general budget.

Masrour Barzani arrives in Manama to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss common issues between Kurdistan and Bahrain

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, arrived in the Bahraini capital, Manama, on Monday, on an official visit.

Barzani said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, "The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations, and discuss and exchange views on issues of common interest, with senior officials in the Kingdom, most notably the King of Bahrain, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and a number of other senior officials."

He added, “Upon our arrival, we were received by Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Kingdom’s Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, and then met with Ms. Noor bint Ali Al Khulaifi, Minister of Sustainable Development and Chief Executive of the Economic Development Board.”

This is only important to us if and when it comes time to exchange our Iraqi dinar bank notes...We don't want to end up like Zimbabwe and not have access to exchange options...When asked whether Iraq has a closed currency system the answer is yes and no. 

 A closed currency is one that is not freely traded on international markets and is typically restricted to use within its issuing country...As of 2024 over a dozen countries maintain closed currency systems [Including the Indian Rupee, Zimbabwe, ZiG dollar and North Korean, Won]...

The Iraqi dinar is not classified as a closed currency, however it might as well be.  Iraq's central bank has implemented specific foreign exchange controls and restrictions to stabilize its currency and prevent illicit financial activities.

The meeting of the presidencies and the State Administration Coalition began today, Sunday, December 8, 2024, to discuss developments in Syria.

The meeting was attended by the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chief Justice, and political leaders.

Syria has witnessed rapid developments since dawn on Sunday with the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime and the opposition's control of Damascus.

The Iraqi authorities have tightened their security fortifications on the border with Syria.
