Baghdad hosts an economic conference to prevent monopoly

The Council for Competition and Anti-Monopoly Affairs will hold its first conference in Baghdad this weekend.


The Economic Consultant In The Council, Dr. Ikram Abdel Aziz, Told Al-Sabah That The Conference, Which Will Be Held Under The Auspices Of Prime Minister Mohamed Shia Al-Sudani In Baghdad, Will Be Attended By Representatives Of The International And Arab Competition Network, As Well As The Heads Of Competition Protection And Anti-Monopoly Authorities In The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia And The Arab Republic Of Egypt.


She pointed out that the Council will present the prizes of the research competition that it previously announced for the best research that discussed the topics of competition and anti-mononopoly, noting that the first session of the conference will be entitled “Competition Authorities and Competitive Neutrality”, in which the Chairman of the Committees of Economy, Industry, Industry, Trade, Investment and Development in the House of Representatives, Hassan Al-Khafaji, in addition to the Ministers of Commerce, Ather Al-Ghurairi, Industry and Minerals, Khaled Battal Al-Najm, will speak.


Abdulaziz pointed out that the second session will be on “indicators for decision-makers in enhancing the competitiveness of investment,” in which the presidents of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, the Egyptian Competitiveness Protection, the Iraqi Federation of Industries, and the President of the German Organization will speak, alerting that the third session will be dedicated to companies concerned with telecommunications and electronic cards and the Association of Iraqi Banks.


Abdulaziz explained that this conference will be a bright and new point in the history of Iraq’s economic paths, as this institution is formed for the first time in the country with the aim of promoting competition and preventing monopoly that serves the producer and consumer alike, by reducing the cost and providing a product or service with the best features, stressing that the Council is an officer for the rhythm of prices and is concerned with all aspects related to services, output, trade and vital facilities essential to the Iraqi economy, and cooperates with government and private entities to achieve the principle of fair competition and prevent monopoly.
For his part, the economic expert Alaa Al-Fahd explained to “Al-Sabah” that the convening of this conference is of great importance because it is held on the International Competition Day, pointing out that Iraq began working in this field by forming the Competition Council to take its role regionally, Arab and globally through participation in economic events, and applying competition standards in order to revitalize the local economy and market to be suitable to attract investments in accordance with the specified international standards.
He expressed the importance of holding this conference for Iraq, as it is held here for the first time and constitutes a milestone, and will be at a high level of importance in terms of shifting towards partnership and creating the right environment for work and investment, and taking appropriate standards in the field of competition and preventing monopoly.

The Iraqi private Banks League (IPBL) has suggested a good sized upward push in banking quarter deposits over the last years, crediting the government’s cognizance on digital transformation and electronic payment systems.
