Vietnam records 7.5% growth in the first half of 2025
7/5/2025
Vietnam announced on Saturday that its economy grew by 7.52 percent in the first half of 2025, its highest growth rate in more than a decade.
This strong growth comes just days after Vietnam avoided the toughest "reciprocal" tariffs threatened by US President Donald Trump on its exports.
"Gross domestic product (GDP) in the first six months of 2025 rose by 7.52 percent compared to the same period last year, the highest level for the first six months of the 2011-2025 period," the General Statistics Office said in a statement.
The country achieved 7.96 percent growth in the second quarter compared to the same period last year, its highest second-quarter growth rate since 2022, when it reached 8.56 percent. Hanoi has targeted annual growth of at least 8 percent.
“Our country’s social and economic performance in the second quarter and first six months of 2025 achieved very positive results, approaching the set target amidst numerous uncertainties surrounding the global and regional economy,” the General Statistics Office said in a statement.
Under the trade agreement with the United States, announced this week, Vietnam negotiated a reduction in tariffs from 46 percent to a minimum of 20 percent in exchange for opening its market to American products.
Vietnam has the third-largest trade surplus with the United States after China and Mexico and has been targeted with one of the highest rates in the US president’s tariff campaign.
