Trump's first comment on the nuclear talks with Iran

4/13/2025

US President Donald Trump described the talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program as going well.

"I think it's going well," he told reporters aboard Air Force One.

"Nothing matters until they're over, so I don't like to talk about them," he added, adding, "But they're going well. I think things with Iran are going very well."

Tehran's cards are lost, the Gulf is not the Gulf, and Trump has changed... an Iraqi expert on Iranian affairs

4/12/2025

Ibrahim al-Abadi, a prominent Iraqi writer and expert on Iranian affairs, described today's Muscat talks between Trump's and Tehran's envoys as significantly different from the historic 2015 agreement, which was later "disappointed." The Gulf states are no longer as opposed to a new agreement as they were, Iran has lost many of its cards in the region, and the White House now wants to show affection toward the Iranians.

Ibrahim Al-Abadi, in an interview with the official channel, followed by the 964 network:

The Iranian foreign minister's meeting with Trump's Middle East envoy is a welcome opportunity, the first of its kind during the new administration's tenure. This is despite the presence of opponents and hawks pushing to escalate the situation to the point of launching a military attack on Iran, whose fundamentalists had been reluctant to engage in negotiations as long as the maximum pressure policy continued. However, when both sides speak of a positive atmosphere, it means that the barrier of suspicion and mistrust is gradually breaking down.

The US envoy said we will show some friendliness toward Iran during the negotiations, and so did the Iranian team, which expressed its openness to peaceful diplomatic solutions. I believe that what happened today will continue in the coming weeks, but we should not expect it to pass smoothly, given the opposition on both sides.

The Americans wanted to open the files of Iran's missile program and regional policies during these negotiations. The Israelis wanted the negotiations to end with the dismantling of the nuclear program, as happened with Muammar Gaddafi. However, Iran insisted on limiting the negotiations to nuclear weapons. They were able to combine direct and indirect negotiations, where the heads of both teams would meet for a few minutes to discuss the core issues of the negotiations. They also insisted that the messages be written, documented, and in precise terms that would not be open to interpretation.

The major absentees from the 2015 negotiations were the regional countries. Israel and Saudi Arabia opposed the agreement, but today the countries of the region agree on the importance of reaching an agreement that ensures stability. I believe the only opponent now is Netanyahu, because he embraces a project to reshape the Middle East and completely destroy the Iranian nuclear program.

Iran's relations with the Gulf states have improved following the historic agreement with Saudi Arabia. Those who opposed Iran's destabilizing behavior in the region have now lowered their demands, as they previously demanded. Iran has become a trust, as Tehran has lost many of its external cards and has been severely impacted by economic sanctions. What the Europeans and Americans want is for Iran to not reach the nuclear threshold, while the Iranians want to maintain a peaceful nuclear program. I believe it is possible for the two sides to reach a new agreement.

The military option remains open, even though Trump does not want it. However, it remains in place to pressure negotiators, as Trump has said that failure of negotiations would mean a military attack led by Israel with US participation.
