๐ฎ๐ถ IRAQ — CURRENT SITUATION STATUS
๐ Status Report | September 16, 2026
Iraq is currently going through a multi-layered transition involving security, banking, liquidity, oil, international finance and relations with the United States.
The important point is that several developments are happening at the same time, but they should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation of a dinar revaluation.
๐ฆ 1. BANKING & LIQUIDITY — ACTIVE REFORM
One of the central issues is liquidity inside the Iraqi banking system.
Iraq continues working on strengthening banks, improving compliance, increasing financial transparency and connecting Iraqi institutions more effectively with international banking networks.
The underlying challenge is that significant amounts of cash remain outside the formal banking system, limiting the ability of banks to expand lending and financial activity.
The U.S. has also been involved in efforts to strengthen Iraq's banking sector and dollar-transaction controls. Atlantic Council+1
STATUS: ๐ ACTIVE / DEVELOPING
๐ต 2. DINAR & EXCHANGE MARKET
The major issue remains the difference between Iraq's official exchange system and the parallel market.
The CBI's broader objective is to improve the functioning of the official financial system and reduce distortions in the currency market.
However:
❌ No confirmed revaluation has been announced.
❌ No confirmed new IQD exchange rate has been announced.
❌ No official implementation date for "Delete the Zeros" has been established in the information reviewed.
Therefore, the currency story remains a reform process, not a confirmed RV event.
STATUS: ๐ DEVELOPING
๐ 3. IRAQ STOCK EXCHANGE / FOREX REGULATION
Iraq is also moving toward greater regulation of financial-market activities, including Forex and leveraged products.
This is significant for the development of Iraq's financial infrastructure, but it should not be confused with the Iraqi dinar itself becoming a freely traded global Forex currency.
STATUS: ๐ข REGULATORY DEVELOPMENT
๐ฆ 4. BANKING SECTOR — MAJOR STRUCTURAL ISSUE
Iraq has a large number of banks and financial institutions, but the key issue is their international capacity.
Capitalization, liquidity, governance, compliance and correspondent-banking relationships remain important areas of development.
The direction being discussed is toward stronger institutions capable of operating more effectively within the international financial system.
STATUS: ๐ MAJOR REFORM AREA
๐ข️ 5. OIL & GAS
The Oil & Gas Law remains one of Iraq's important unresolved economic files.
At the same time, Baghdad and Erbil have been reporting progress and understandings regarding:
Oil
Budget arrangements
Revenues
SOMO
Trade/customs systems
There are also new energy discussions with international companies such as TotalEnergies. Reuters
Iraq's oil exports remain economically critical, and recent disruptions have created additional pressure on the sector. Reuters
STATUS: ๐ ACTIVE / NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUE
๐บ๐ธ 6. U.S.–IRAQ RELATIONS
This is currently one of the most important areas to watch.
The United States is moving toward the end of its current military mission in Iraq, with remaining troops expected to leave by September 30, 2026. AP News
At the same time, Washington continues to emphasize Iraqi sovereignty and state control over armed groups.
This means the relationship is increasingly shifting from a primarily military framework toward a combination of:
๐บ๐ธ Security
๐ต Finance
๐ Economic cooperation
๐ฆ Banking
๐ค Strategic partnership
๐ก️ 7. ARMED FACTIONS — HIGH ATTENTION
This is currently one of the biggest uncertainties.
The Iraqi government is under pressure to bring weapons under state authority.
However, several powerful armed factions have indicated that they do not intend to surrender their weapons by September 30 and instead link the issue to the complete withdrawal of foreign forces. AP News
This creates a significant political and security challenge for Baghdad.
The situation became even more serious following a drone attack on Saudi infrastructure that was traced to Iraq, prompting Baghdad to launch an investigation and remove a provincial military commander. Financial Times
STATUS: ๐ด HIGH-RISK / UNRESOLVED
๐ฐ 8. IRAQ'S DOLLAR SYSTEM
Iraq remains heavily dependent on oil revenues and the international dollar system.
This makes access to dollars extremely important for:
๐ต Government spending
๐ฆ Imports
๐ฆ Banking
๐ International trade
๐ด Currency-market stability
Any major disruption to Iraq's access to international dollar liquidity could therefore have significant economic consequences.
STATUS: ๐ CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
๐ 9. INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL INTEGRATION
The larger objective appears to be creating a financial system capable of operating more effectively internationally.
That involves:
๐ฆ Stronger banks
๐ฐ More capital
๐ Better compliance
๐ Better regulation
๐ Correspondent banking relationships
๐ณ Digital payments
๐ต Better currency-market controls
Iraq's transition is therefore much larger than simply changing the exchange rate.
๐️ 10. POLITICAL & INSTITUTIONAL REFORM
The government is also dealing with corruption, institutional restructuring and questions surrounding Iraq's political system.
Recent reporting describes a significant anti-corruption campaign involving arrests and seizures of cash and gold. The Guardian
At the same time, questions remain about how effectively the government can consolidate authority over political and armed groups.
STATUS: ๐ ACTIVE / UNCERTAIN
๐ 11. THE NEXT IMPORTANT WINDOW
The period leading into September 30 deserves close attention.
Several issues converge around this date:
๐บ๐ธ U.S. military transition
๐ก️ Armed-faction question
๐️ Iraqi sovereignty
๐ต Financial relationships
๐ฎ๐ถ Government authority
What happens after September 30 could provide important information about the next phase of Iraq's political and security structure.
๐ฎ๐ถ OVERALL STATUS
๐ข MOVING FORWARD
Banking modernization
Financial-market regulation
International economic relationships
Energy cooperation
Institutional reform efforts
๐ STILL DEVELOPING
Banking liquidity
Currency-market normalization
Oil & Gas legislation
International banking integration
Baghdad–Erbil economic arrangements
Dollar-market reforms
๐ด MAJOR UNRESOLVED ISSUES
Armed factions and weapons under state control
U.S. transition
Parallel-market distortions
Full modernization of the banking sector
Long-term institutional consolidation
๐ฅ THE BIG PICTURE
Iraq is not sitting still.
The country is simultaneously dealing with its banking system, liquidity, currency market, oil legislation, international financial integration, security structure and relationship with Washington.
But the facts currently support describing this as a period of major reform and transition, not as confirmation that a specific dinar revaluation is imminent.
๐ The key things to watch now:
CBI decisions → Banking liquidity → Dollar market → Banking reforms → Oil & Gas → September 30 → Armed factions → U.S.–Iraq financial relationship → Currency policy.
๐ฎ๐ถ๐ต The next phase will be determined by what Iraq actually implements — not by speculation.
