๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ถ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ”ฅ IRAQ’S FINANCE MINISTRY & CBI ALIGN: IS THE SYSTEM PREPARING FOR A MAJOR MONETARY REFORM, SUCH AS THE “DELETE THE ZEROS” PROJECT?

๐Ÿ“ฐ NEWS SUMMARY

Iraqi Finance Minister Faleh al-Sari met with Central Bank of Iraq Governor Nizar Naser to discuss strategies for strengthening monetary stability and improving coordination between the country’s financial institutions.

The meeting focused on closer cooperation between fiscal and monetary authorities, better financial management, liquidity, information sharing, and continued modernization of Iraq’s financial system.

๐Ÿ”Ž WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

At first glance, this may look like a routine government meeting. But when we look at what is being discussed, it becomes much more interesting.

A major monetary reform cannot be carried out by the Central Bank alone.

If Iraq eventually implements the “Delete the Three Zeros” Project, the entire financial system would have to be prepared and coordinated.

๐Ÿฆ THE CBI would manage the monetary side.

๐Ÿ›️ THE FINANCE MINISTRY would have to coordinate the fiscal side.

๐Ÿ’ต BANKS would have to process currency conversions and adjust customer accounts.

๐Ÿ’ป FINANCIAL SYSTEMS would have to be updated.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ SALARIES, PENSIONS & GOVERNMENT PAYMENTS would need to be converted correctly.

๐Ÿ“Š BUDGETS, TAXES, CONTRACTS & GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTS would also have to reflect the new monetary structure.

๐Ÿ”ข HOW DOES THIS CONNECT TO “DELETE THE ZEROS”?

The removal of three zeros would fundamentally involve a redenomination of the currency.

For example, hypothetically:

25,000 old IQD → 25 new IQD

That does not automatically mean the dinar suddenly becomes 1,000 times more valuable.

It means the monetary unit itself is changed and the entire economy must be converted accordingly.

That is why institutional coordination is so important.

๐Ÿ’ง LIQUIDITY IS ANOTHER KEY PIECE

The meeting also comes at a time when Iraq is focused on monetary stability and financial liquidity.

A currency reform would require the banking system to have the capacity to handle:

๐Ÿ’ต Currency exchanges
๐Ÿฆ Bank deposits
๐Ÿ’ณ Electronic payments
๐Ÿ‘ฅ Salaries and pensions
๐Ÿ“Š Government accounts
๐Ÿ”„ Conversion between old and new denominations

If the banking infrastructure is not prepared, a monetary transition could create serious disruptions.

๐Ÿค FISCAL + MONETARY COORDINATION

This may be one of the most important elements.

The CBI controls monetary policy, while the Finance Ministry manages the government’s fiscal operations.

For a major monetary reform to work smoothly, these two sides would need to operate from the same plan.

The sequence would essentially be:

๐ŸŸข Monetary stability
⬇️
๐ŸŸข Liquidity management
⬇️
๐ŸŸข CBI–Finance coordination
⬇️
๐ŸŸข Banking system modernization
⬇️
๐ŸŸข Digital financial infrastructure
⬇️
๐ŸŸข Preparation for monetary conversion

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ถ MY TAKE

This meeting does NOT prove that Iraq is now implementing the Delete the Three Zeros Project.

There is no announcement here of a new exchange rate, new currency denominations, or an official implementation date.

But it does show something important:

Iraq is strengthening several of the institutional foundations that would be necessary for a major monetary reform.

And when we look at this alongside efforts toward greater monetary stability, banking modernization, digitalization, liquidity management, and closer coordination between financial authorities, the picture becomes increasingly interesting.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The key question is no longer simply whether Iraq can announce a monetary reform.

The bigger question is whether Iraq is building the financial infrastructure and institutional coordination necessary to execute one successfully.

And this latest CBI–Finance Ministry meeting is another piece of that puzzle.
