Iraq, Iran Discuss Regional Stability in High-Level Talks

ERBIL — Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Iran's Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani met in Baghdad on Thursday to discuss the development of political, security, and economic relations between their countries.

At a joint press conference following their meeting, Hussein emphasized the strength of Iraqi-Iranian relations, underscoring the participation of a high-level Iraqi delegation in the funeral of the late Iranian president as a testament to their robust ties. "We were waiting for Raisi and Amirabdollahian to visit, but fate didn't let them," Hussein noted.

---- The Iraqi leader pointed out that their discussions covered the complexities in the region and the necessity for continuous dialogue and consultations to normalize conflicts. "We reiterate our position and support the cessation of hostilities," he said, addressing the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and expressing concern over the Israeli threat to southern Lebanon.

Ali Bagheri Kani, who arrived in Baghdad earlier on Thursday, highlighted the shared culture and history between Iraq and Iran. He stated that strengthening bilateral relations would benefit the security, stability, and prosperity of the region. "We and Iraq share a common culture and history," Kani said, emphasizing their countries' responsible role in regional stability.

The Iranian official also “condemned” Israel's ongoing attacks on Gaza, calling for an unconditional end to “the violence”. He urged the United States to stop arming Israel if it is serious about ending “the bloodshed” in Gaza. "There must be an unconditional end to Israel's attacks on Gaza," Kani stressed.

Following his visit to Baghdad, Kani is scheduled to visit the Kurdistan Region and meet with senior officials there.
