🚨🇮🇶 IRAQ’S OIL SECTOR NEEDS A MODERN LEGAL FRAMEWORK! 🛢️📜
Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani is highlighting a major issue facing Iraq’s energy sector: the country still operates under oil and gas legislation dating back to 1975.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Barzani emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive federal Hydrocarbon Law that reflects Iraq’s modern economic and energy realities. 🇮🇶⚖️
For years, disputes between Baghdad and Erbil have centered around oil exports, control of resources, revenues, and the responsibilities of both sides. A modern federal law could establish clearer rules for how these issues are managed.
🛢️ Who controls the resources?
📤 How should oil exports be handled?
💰 How should revenues be distributed?
🤝 What responsibilities belong to Baghdad and Erbil?
⚖️ What legal framework should govern Iraq’s energy sector?
These questions remain critical for Iraq’s long-term economic stability.
A unified and modern Oil & Gas Law could potentially provide greater legal certainty, reduce recurring disputes, improve investment conditions, and create a clearer path for cooperation between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region.
This does not mean a new law has already been approved. Rather, Barzani’s comments highlight the continuing push for a federal framework capable of resolving these long-standing issues.
🇮🇶 Iraq’s energy future may depend not only on how much oil it produces, but also on having clear and modern rules governing that oil.
