🇮🇶🔥 IRAQ’S CURRENCY VOLATILITY MAY EXPLAIN THE CBI’S SILENCE ON “DELETE THE ZEROS”

💵 NEWS SUMMARY:
The Iraqi dinar has weakened in Kurdistan’s parallel market, with $100 trading around 154,250 IQD, while rates outside the markets exceed 154,750 IQD. The volatility highlights the continuing gap between the parallel and official exchange rates.

🔥 NOW LOOK AT WHAT THIS MAY TELL US ABOUT THE CBI…

This is exactly the type of problem the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) would have anticipated before openly promoting a major monetary project like “Delete the Zeros.”

Why?

Because simply talking publicly about removing zeros could trigger speculation, expectations, currency hoarding and increased demand for dollars.

And what would that create?

📈 More speculation
💵 More demand for USD
🌪️ Greater parallel-market volatility
↔️ A wider gap between the official and market rates

That is precisely what the CBI does NOT want.

🎯 The CBI’s broader objective has been to gradually reduce the gap between the official exchange rate and the parallel-market rate, while strengthening the banking system, increasing digital payments, bringing cash into the formal banking sector and controlling illicit financial flows.

So here is the interesting part…

🔥 “DELETE THE ZEROS” could ultimately be part of the monetary solution — but announcing it too aggressively before the market is ready could temporarily become part of the problem.

The CBI may therefore have had a strategic reason for keeping the project relatively quiet while it worked on the conditions necessary for monetary reform.

First:

💰 Control illicit funds
🏦 Strengthen the banking system
💳 Reduce dependence on cash
💵 Bring informal capital into banks
📉 Narrow the parallel-market gap
🔎 Improve financial transparency
🇮🇶 Then advance broader monetary reform

⚠️ This does NOT mean a revaluation or “Delete the Zeros” is imminent. It means the current volatility gives us a clearer picture of why monetary reform cannot happen in isolation.

The CBI has to prepare the entire financial ecosystem first.

And perhaps that is exactly what we are watching unfold. 👀🇮🇶💱
