🇮🇶🇮🇷 Iraq & Iran: A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations? 🏛️✨

Following Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to Iran, both countries released a joint statement announcing that the Iraq-Iran Supreme Joint Committee will meet once a year at the highest leadership level, with meetings alternating between Baghdad and Tehran.

The goal: strengthen coordination, facilitate the implementation of agreements, and expand cooperation across all sectors. 🤝

But reading between the lines… 👀

Institutionalizing this mechanism can be viewed as a move to shift Iraq-Iran relations into a more official, state-controlled, and transparent framework, reducing the space for informal meetings and parallel channels that historically allowed certain Iran-aligned factions inside Iraq to exert influence.

The message appears to be clear:

🇮 🇶 “The Iraq-Iran relationship must be managed through the Iraqi State.”

By creating a structured annual dialogue between governments, Baghdad strengthens the role of the Prime Minister and state institutions as the main decision-makers on strategic matters.

This also aligns with other recent moves by Iraq:
🛡️ Greater emphasis on national sovereignty.
⚖️ Stronger state control over security.
🔐 Restructuring the role of weapons outside state authority.
🏦 Strengthening economic and financial institutions.

This does not necessarily mean a break with Iran. Iraq continues to maintain important economic, political, and geographic ties with its neighbor. However, it may represent a shift in the dynamic: moving from influence through informal networks toward a more State-to-State relationship, where Baghdad seeks greater control over national decisions.

🇮🇶 Iraq appears to be sending a message: a strong state requires strategic decisions to flow through its institutions.

We continue connecting the dots… 🧩✨
